  • Research :

    I work principally on explosive volcanism and its products. I am interested in the deep ascent of magma through the crust, the assembly of shallow magma chambers, the triggering of eruptions, and the timescales on which these processes take place. This work exploits petrological techniques including melt inclusion volatile content and intracrystalline diffusion chronometry. I have also worked on the dynamics of pyroclastic flow emplacement and on the formation of calderas, via a combination of field and experimental techniques. My main field areas have included Santorini caldera (Greece), Soufrière Hills Volcano (Montserrat, Antilles) and Crater Lake (Oregon).

    Scientific and administrative responsibilities :

    1.  Scientific Coordinator of the laboratory of excellence project ‘ClerVolc‘ (2011-). This project is funded at 9 million euros over ten years. My role as scientific coordinator is to animate science done in this major project, which involves six laboratories of our university plus the French Geological Survey.

    2.  Chair of the Research Networking Programme ‘MeMoVolc’ of the European Science Foundation (2011-2016). ‘MeMoVolc’ stands for Measuring and modelling Volcano Eruption Dynamics. The network was funded at 0.48 million over five years, and is funded by eight European countries, with participants from 10 countries.

    Teaching :

    I teach courses in volcanology, igneous petrology and clastic sedimentaology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
